Los Angeles based Taalman Koch Architecture recently brought their signature prefab system to the world of pop-up stores. This month a 240sf Pop-Up store was set up for the Palm Pre phone. The small glass building appeared at the Americana in Glendale and was later disassembled, moved to the Grove in Hollywood, and reassembled a single 24 hour period. The entire project was designed, fabricated, and erected in less than 5 weeks. The structure will be on display at the Grove through the end of the month.

Taalman Koch is perhaps most famous for their itHouse. You may have also seen their work at Space 1520, home of the Hennessey + Ingalls design bookstore in Hollywood.

The book features the work of close to thirty architects and their work with prefab. As much as being a book about prefab, this book could be helpful to anyone studying small modern floorplans (each project shows a small diagram of its plan). Located in Desert Hot Springs, California, the 2000 square foot Desert House was designed for Leo Marmol and his wife Alisa Becket. Built with a steel floor frame, steel columns, and a steel roof frame, it was the prototype for Marmol Radziner Prefab. The house is completely solar powered and minimizes the need for heating and cooling through the use of shades and concrete floors. Los Angeles based Marmol Radziner Prefab specializes in sustainable prefab. The house is built, shipped, and assembled on location. Predesigned and custom homes are available.
