This just in for all of you thinking about going to art school, RISD has announced John Maeda is going to become their next president. For those unfamiliar, Rhode Island School of Art and Design (RISD) is one of the top five art schools in the US. John Maeda is a Graphic Designer, Computer scientist and Associate Director of Research at MIT Media Lab.
In short, this means that one of the old school art institutions is getting someone from the new school to run the show. There are a lot of schools that teach art, and a lot of schools that teach technology, but almost none that do both. Does this mean he can get Joshua Davis to come teach a few classes? Will RISD produce the next Jeff Han? Only time will tell, but the gauntlet has certainly been thrown down for every other art school who wants to move into the 21st century.
