We all have fears of the effects of excessive cell phone use, especially from the iPhone which seems to interfere with radios, conference call units or any piece of electronics within a three foot radius. In response, Pong has released a cell phone case for 3G and 3GS which claims to redirect radiation away from the head without reducing signal strength. An extensive test by Wired supported the manufacturer’s claims finding a 65% reduction in radiation to the head. Available in green or black. Pick it up here for $60. Thanks to Heather for the tip.
Above is an augmented reality app named Layar. Augmented reality, takes the world as we see it, interprets it, then adds to it in some way. There is a lot of anticipation around the new iphone. The combination of GPS and the newly included compass mean that apps can determine position and orientation of the phone. Whether it’s a game or an innovative way of accessing information, the possibilities are pretty amazing. –Via Mac Rumors

Apple announced updates to its iPhone lineup at WWDC 2009 this year. All phones have been dropped in price (taking into account subsidizing from AT&T). A new model, referred to as the 3G S, now shoots video and gives you more control over camera focus. Additionally, you can edit (trim) video on the phone and share instantly. Available Friday, June 19. A new version of the iPhone OS for all iPhone users will be available starting on the 12th. Included in the update is the long awaited ability to copy and paste.
Built in cigarette lighters in cars are starting to feel like an anachronism which should be relegated to our parents’ generation. Simply taking the lighter coil out and calling it a power source doesn’t help either (at least with the lighter we stood a chance of surviving while stranded in the wilderness). What Belkin has done should be a watermark for car manufacturers everywhere. They have effectively fitted the car power outlet with a USB jack. So now you can charge your iPhone, iPod or other device easily while on the go. Sold in different configurations ranging from $15-30. More info here.

Your guess is as good as ours as to the legitimacy of this image, but it’s obviously getting some buzz. We found this on Doshdosh, but they make no mention of where they got it. As they mention, until Apple confirms this is real (highly unlikely) take it with a grain of salt.
Our guess is that this is an outsiders best guess as to what the next iPhone might look like. But that said, this may turn out to be a pretty good guess.
We were a little underwhelmed yet again with the release of the Kindle 2 last week. While Amazon’s e-book reading device is light years behind the iPhone it still sports a hefty $400 price tag. Low and behold, Amazon has just announced that it is releasing an iPhone app which will allow you to read e-books (downloaded from Amazon.com) on your iphone. While this is obviously not going to replace a good paperback anytime soon, it is nice to have something entertaining to read when you suddenly find yourself having to wait around (doctors office, DMV, etc) with nothing to read.
What do you get when you combine the graphic design geekdom of kerning letter pairs with the pacing of Tetris? Answer: The KERN iPhone App by FORMation. Letters must be inserted with pinpoint precision into place within words. A hair too far to the left or right and you’ll loose a life (measured in ligatures). Available from the iTunes Store for 99 cents. The words themselves are graphic design themed. Props for giving tribute to Rudy Vanderlans (of Emigre fame) among others. Video demo after the jump.
Portuguese designer Joao Oliveira is staying on top of his game. He’s among a new generation of tech savvy designers selling his work as iPhone art and working the web at the ripe old age of 21. Currently a student at Escola Superior de Artes e Design, Oliveira is making strides working with brands like Japanese fashion Marui Co. Well definately be keeping our eye on Joao.
