We posted earlier about Dave Kinsey’s show at BLK/MKT Gallery. For anyone who missed the opening, Kinsey and BLK/MKT Gallery delivered an amazing show. Politically inspired, Kinsey’s work explores the frustration of apathy and the burnden of defeat. “Apathy seems increasingly common in modern western culture,” Kinsey observes, “There is a general sense that people feel helpless or don’t care to engage in issues that affect their lives and the lives of those around them. Consumerism and even modern technology allows for and easy complacency.”

In a way his artwork, like the political landscape, can be perceived on multiple levels. On one level, we see the palatable beauty of his work. At a deeper level, we the see conflict and despair of his subject. His paintings take on a painterly style which encourage closer observation of the layered imagery. Static restrained imagery is juxtaposed against aggressive splashes of paint. The paintings are most powerful when in seen person and are well worth a visit to the gallery. If you’re a Dave Kinsey fan and have any hope of ever getting an original of his work, the opening of “Sure Why Not” at BLK/MMRKT Gallery this Saturday Oct 20th is mostly likely as good a chance as you will ever get.

Dave Kinsey is a powerhouse of the graffiti turned fine artist set. His latest work seems to have evolved a bit from the flat graphic illustrations we’re used to seeing into something a bit more painterly but still distinctly Dave Kinsey.

This is probably also a good chance to get a signed copy of the gallery’s new book BLK/MKT Two, including works by Tiffany Bozic, David Ellis, Mel Kadel, Dave Kinsey, Adam Kurtzman, Jeff Soto, just to name a few.

Dave Kinsey is releasing this new print titled “Momentum” through BLK/MRKT Editions today, September 13 at 12 noon PST. We’d suggest setting an alarm for noon if you want one of the 300 prints available, because if you check back the day after you’ll be as out of luck as we were trying to get a Ceci n’est pas un pistolet print

Black Market Gallery has a slew of new prints available from artists they’ve featured in the past few years such as Tiffany Bozic, Ben Tour, WK Interact, and Yuri Shimojo. Our favorite is Dave Kinsey’s homage to Rene Magritte (shown above) titled “This is not a gun.”

We got an email from Dave Kinsey a few weeks ago that he was releasing three new prints on his website. We got the e-mail on a Friday and by Monday the entire batch was sold out. Word to the wise, if have the chance to buy one of these prints, do it.

If you’ve been living under a rock the past five years you may have missed Dave Kinsey redefining the world of the designer/illustrator/artist. Kinsey crosses the gamut of commercial illustration, screen print poster design, and fine art painting, with the strong graphic shapes and graffiti style typography taken to a whole new level.

Although currently everything is sold out, you’re best shot at getting a piece of Kinsey’s work is though his site or at the BLK/MRKT Gallery. We also found a nice write up on his show at Art Prostitute on fecalface.com.
