American photographer Andrew Bush captures people in their cars doing what we should be doing, driving. No cell phones, no fuss but some with an occasional map. Bush takes us back to time when it was just us and our car, and maybe a simple radio. In his series, ‘66 drives’ we get to spy on people across the United States, most in Los Angeles, singing, waiting at stop lights or driving on highways, the simpler things we used to do in our cars. This collection reminds us of a road trip across America but seems to travel back in time, as well as across state lines. Read the rest of this entry »
Nicholas Di Genova is the dreamer, builder and maker of all things crazy looking in his little post-apocalyptic world of drawings. You won’t need to pop any hallucinogens for this one, this is served straight up and messed up with heavy doses of visual insanity. Di Genova’s portfolio is packed with things he that calls Bi-Faced Attack-Toads, a Cowterpillar Walker, an Elephant-Faced-Fowl, and Shark-Toothed Terriers to name a frightful few. “For a lot of my work, my technique is pretty straightforward, ink and watercolor on paper,” says Di Genova. “I use a lot of source materials in my work, so my studio is totally covered in layers of books. For the mylar paintings (the stuff with color), the technique is very similar to that of traditional animators: ink on one side of the mylar, animation paint on the other.”
Born in 1988 in California, Brittanie Pendleton currently lives and works in Austin, Texas and already has a few things under her belt. Her website, Hairplay Photography, contains a beautiful array of vision-driven photography set in the ‘everyday’. It reminds us of the striking work you would see in an Urban Outfitters catalog. What looks like ‘just another Facebook girl’s photo collection’ is more like a talented, up and coming, young woman who knows how to utilize a camera and the settings around her to get an effect that we think we have seen before but continue to love it for its familiarity.
We’ve seen some reverse tags here in LA along the 110 north just before the 5 north exit but never anything quite like this. When we first saw reverese graffiti it really stuck it gave us quite a chuckle. The word graffiti implies vandalism, where as this kind of work comes close to using graffiti as a vehicle for urban renwal, and there something very punk rock about that idea.
Paul “Moose” Curtis using stencils and pressurized water to make make art on walls in downtown San Francisco. This could be done in almost any urban area, and we’re sure canvases abound in every city around the world. The stark contrast brought about by Curtis simply cleaning a wall is astounding when you realize the wall’s true color. We think this is an idea we’ll see a lot more of in the future.
Freelance creative director, and illustrator, Miika Saksi wows us with his colorful array splashed through out his body of work. Hailing from Finland Saksi specializes in illustrations, photo manipulations, and graphically design art pieces. Our personal favorite is the Stormtrooper Women piece he did for Stupido Records which is the only serious competition for dogs with lasers we’ve ever seen. Read the rest of this entry »
Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art is pleased to announce An Absolute Shower, a solo exhibition featuring the work of UK artist Will Barras. Barras will be showcasing more than 15 new original paintings and drawings in a wide assortment of media, including pen, pencil, acrylic, ink and spray paint on printed fabric, linen, canvas and paper. We did a post on Will Barras a few months back after seeing his work and a group show at the Scion Installation LA Space and he was easily one of our favorites. We have a ton of fantastic photos from that show you can see on our flickr feed. Barras will be in attendance at the opening reception on Saturday, June 7, 2008, from 8PM to midnight. The show will run through July 6.

Check out this hot, new, Limited Edition print courtesy of the fabulous Scott Hansen. “I see Barack Obama as a leader who can inspire people to effect change and who himself can effect change. As an artist, it was only natural for me to want to create something that visually echoed these sentiments. I wanted to create an image that evoked the ideals I feel are central to our needs at this critical time in history: change, progress and hope. Because Barack Obama represents all three of these things to me, I felt compelled to express that through my work.” Hansen expressed. Hansen is the second artist to be asked to donate his talent to the Artists for Obama Gallery. The first was Shepard Fairey, you can check out that piece here.
You can purchase this print at the Official Site for Barack Obama for $70, and all proceeds go to the Barack Obama Campaign.
