The San Diego Comic-Con 2008 kicks off (July 23rd Preview Night) and goes through (July 27th). For those of you who are familiar with this annual spectacle, you shouldn’t be too alarmed when encountering people from different states, countries, worlds, galaxies, or dimensions. For those of you who are not so familiar, get ready for an alternate reality of costumes, comics, & movies, not to mention the nightly rooftop parties where you may run into Batman (Christion Bale), Ironman (Robert Downey Jr.) or The Hulk (Ed Norton). The San Diego Comic-Con is the largest of its kind in the world and fills the capacity of the San Diego Convention Center with over 125,000 attendees, last year and growing.
The Comic-Con was not always the huge event that it is today. In it’s humble beginnings the very first convention drew 300 people and was held at the U. S. Grant Hotel back in 1970. Originally showcasing comic books, science fiction/fantasy and film/television, the convention has expanded over the years to include a huge range of pop culture elements including horror, anime, manga, animation, toys, collectible card games, video games and webcomics. These days Hollywood has established a huge presence at Comi-Con as comic book movies drive the summer blockbuster season, and Sci-Fi fans, comic book artists, celebrities, producers, directors, and the occasional costumed crime fighter mix it up under the same roof.
Along with panels, seminars, and workshops with comic book professionals, there are previews of upcoming feature films, portfolio review sessions with top comic book and video game companies. There are also awards ceremonies, The Masquerade; a costume contest, and the Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival which showcases shorts and underground feature films that you may only get to see here.
