Last night Radiohead concluded their much anticipated visit to Los Angeles with a stellar performance at the Hollywood Bowl. As our readers might have guessed we are all big fans of Radiohead here at NB.

I must say I could not have anticipated the quality of the show. It’s refreshing to know that some artists are putting in tremendous effort to ensure that the audience gets their money’s worth. The use of several fixed video feeds from all over the stage gave the audience an intimate look at the band. The attention to detail in camera angle and the arrangement of the images on the screens is consistent with the promotional videos that have been released to support “In Rainbows.” But by far the most impressive element of the show were the delicate LED’s which hung like a chandelier above the band and flanked them on both sides.

The most interesting part of the Radiohead approach is their embrace of technology. Each piece in the release of the In Rainbows album has given their fans an intimate look at the band for a great price, if not free, and has brought fans closer than ever. The creation of the W.A.S.T.E_CENTRAL social network is a huge success by music industry standards. Not only do fans interact with each other but with band members who interact with fans just as you would with your friends on MySpace, updating profiles almost religiously. The social network is supported by the bands tour blog which provides a better look into tour life via photos and home made movies. Every music industry PR would love to have their bands participate this way, but the honest truth is you’d be hard pressed to find bands that would.

Last night’s show was, for me, the icing on this grand experiment that Radiohead has incited. Give away music for free, interact with fans on their level, and put forth a spot on tour with out the initial support of a major record label. The formula may only work for Radiohead, but they have definately proved it works.

We are happy you enjoyed the piece. It is not all that often we are able to experience music in this way. The stage show was outstanding, the visuals were impressive, the sound was perfect (as it most often is at the Hollywood Bowl), and Radiohead put on an incredible performance. All of the people we have spoken to about the show have said, they were not expecting such an great experience on all levels. Hats off to Radiohead.
