Architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa of the Japanese firm Sanaa are responsible for the New Museum of Contemporary Art which opens tomorrow in New York. The institution has moved from SoHo to the Bowery, turning its back on an upscale environment and embracing its gritty roots. The 60,000-square-foot museum was built on a $50 million budget.

A stacked box design allows for skylights to bring diffused light into the spaces of the museum. Design decisions like this and a glass facade to the lobby connect the museum to its surrounding environment. The museum’s spaces vary in scale and feel so that exploring the art becomes a journey. what i liked about this building is the flat rigid surfaces of the facade which makes it in 2D and the sky is the background as it is a 2D picture. the sifting of the blocks is very interesting.
