Royal Mosa of the Netherlands is spearheading a movement in sustainability. Founded in 1883, today they are the Netherlands leading tile manufacturer. In recent years they have adopted some very impressive standards and have accomplished incredible reductions in key areas. They sum up their boldness in one simple statement, “Our ambition to make the way we do business as sustainable as possible, from cradle to grave, and even from cradle to cradle.”
Dust emissions at Mosa facilities have been reduced by 90%. By building their own water treatment plant, they are able to reuse nearly all of the waste-water through the manufacturing process at their primary facility, their porcelain plant reuses 100% of all waste-water. The use of 85% local raw materials keeps the overall carbon footprint of the final product low.
Most importantly the Mosa floor tiles produce zero waste. Using a process called “Ultragres,” Mosa is able to add between 12% and 45% recycled material to the body layer of each tile. The top and body layers are then isostatically pressed to form a single fired mono-product.
By implementing a full environmental management system Royal Mosa is leading the industry in sustainable manufacturing, while maintaining integrity in design.
