A tip for our Los Angeles readers: next time shopping on Melrose or Beverly take a break and check out a small but wonderful collection of paintings by Mark Rothko. Born in Russia and raised in the United States, Rothko contributed much to 1950s abstract expressionism. His signature style uses contrasting color on large canvases in order to overwhelm or envelope the viewer. He even insisted that his paintings be viewed from a distance of 18 inches for full effect. It is perhaps fitting to see his meditative work in a small, but intimate space. Located at Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in the Pacific Design Center. Hours and directions can be found here. Now through January 21st. Photo by Brian Forrest.
