Wes Anderson has made a 13-minute short titled Hotel Chevalier as a prologue to his upcoming film The Darjeeling Limited. It is available as a free download from the iTunes store. The short stars Natalie Portman and Jason Schwartzman and is in keeping with the theme of formality paired with failure that appears in his other work. For anyone who fell in love with The Royal Tenenbaums or Rushmore, this a nice film to whet the appetite for Anderson’s new anticipated film.
Wes Anderson has always made great use of artwork in his movies and his brother Eric, a writer and illustrator, has produced illustrations for him as well as collaborated on set designs. Above you can see a painting by Mexican Artist Miguel Calderón which prominently appeared in The Royal Tenenbaums. Also of interest was a small work which hung on a wall in Hotel Chevalier and appears below. I believe the artist of that piece may be the same as the one who has drawn a series of birds completely from memory. If anyone knows, please post a reply.
The Darjeeling Limited is currently only in a handful of theaters but will be more widely released beginning this Friday. It was written by Anderson, Roman Coppola and Jason Schwartzman.
