Reef tourism, an estimated $9.6 billion dollar industry worldwide, is the economic driving force for many small coastal towns and enclaves. In areas like Cancun, Mexico coral reef deteriorate at an accelerated rate when they are subjected to persistent contact by divers and tourists. Rapid deterioration of coastal reef pose a direct threat to both local marine life and area tourism.

In an effort to balance the need for reef based tourism and conservation, the Cancun Marine Park partnered with British sculptor Jason De Caires Taylor to create the first underwater sculpture museum. As the co-founder and Artistic Director of the Museo Subacuatico del Arte or MUSA Taylor presents his inaugural piece Evolucion Silenciosa or Silent Evolution. Working from a locally based studio Taylor cast some four hundred individual sculptures for the monumental undertaking.

The 120 tons of cement, sand, and gravel are already home to marine life and are attracting new species everyday. With conservation and sustainable tourism in mind, Talor and MUSA hope to add new pieces and new artists to the unique aquatic collection.
