2008 has been the year to attempt the world’s most spectacular glow in the dark performance. First came Kanye West, then the notorious 12 hour Santa Monica pier event, but none can compare to this. Though the closing ceremonies of the 2008 Olympic Games in Bejing prove to be less spectacular then the 4 hour extravaganza which marked the opening of the games 17 days ago, all the same they were impressive.
Thousands of Chinese drummers, dancers, and performers were clad in glowing costumes and brightly colored garb. Some rode glowing gyro like bicyles through the center of the stadium while two giant drums swung precariously mounted by two men each. David Beckham was tasked with a cameo appearance where he launched a soccer ball into a crowd of dancers hitting one of them in the head. With that the Olympics were officially handed over to London. The Olympic flame was extinguished with an incredible performance including 400 performers who formed themselves into shapes on the “memory tower”. Cirque du Soleil has nothing on the Chinese. 2012 here we come.
