Art Walk Downtown LA

The Downtown Art Walk was one of those little things we kept meaning to get around to but never quite made the time until now. We’re long familiar with the Downtown LA scene but the picture of this area painted by Art Walk was profoundly different than what we were used to, and the fantastic work by Los Angeles artists was only half the reason.

If you’ve been Downtown lately, you can’t help but notice the loft buildings propelling an urban renessaince as you drive near Little Tokyo or anywhere around the Staples Center. But Art Walk follows an older track through the heart of Downtown into a stretch from 2nd street down to 9th between Spring street and Los Angeles Avenue. What’s easy to miss in a car becomes hard to ignore on foot, namely the giant beautiful buildings in downtown LA constructed nearly a century ago that lie largely unoccupied with the exception of a few galleries on the bottom floor. As we walked by the massive marble columns and iron doors of the original LA stock exchange and surrounding empty store front’s, we kept asking ourselves, “how can these stay unoccupied?”

We’ve been through Downtown at night many times and the stark emptiness is somewhat shocking in a city that’s so overwhemingly crowded. But this night, we were treated to an entirely different experience. We found a new Downtown LA that was brightly lit with open café’s and a just-big-enough-to-be-fun crowd of people. Almost all the gallery owners were friendly and welcoming, and security are quietly scattered about all along the trail.

We soaked up the feeling of being in on a secret. We found ourselves on the inside of a little scene on the edge of happening, just big enough to have some momentum, yet just small enough to be missed by hipper than thou scensters and the suburban LA crowds.

Here are some highlights just in case you missed it.
