We first heard about Slow Home at this year’s CA Boom design show. We have since been following Canadian architect and Slow Home creator John Brown’s daily lectures on construction/demolition, real estate, and architecture. Taking his philosophy from the ever popular “slow food” movement, John often compares urban sprawl to fast food excess. He stresses the importance of quality products over mass production and emphasizes making better choices about how and where we live. Through daily exercises Brown’s site tackles common issues faced when updating and remodeling. The site features room by room design breakdowns, case studies, and an extensive archive of past exercises. Inspired by this site, we can now attempt to tackle some of the more ominous design challenges facing LA living with a little more confidence.
While the majority of the work from Vienna born photographer Bela Borsodi is commercial, it’s the twist of sexuality and unconventional product integration that brings his sculptural compositions to life. At times the female form serves as an almost arbitrary medium in the artistic display of high end goods. This approach highlights the individual design of products with eye candy as a secondary focus. It’s unfortunate that most of his work appears in European publications, as many images are far to risque for the American mainstream.
In the back of every photographer’s head is the dream to shoot 3d (stereoscopic) photos. Not the cheesy blue and red kind. Full color, believable 3d. This setup appears to do just that. A double lensed camera shoots two 120mm film slides simultaneously. Because it shoots film, the color will look great and 120mm film has a bigger negative than the 35mm most people are used to which translates to higher quality.
For those who don’t know, Holga’s inexpensive construction (pastic lens) translates to a low-fi quality which Holga lovers are addicted to. Perfect for anyone who wants to take their photography to the next dimension. Pick it up here.
The Melbourne native Peter White designed this wonderful breakfast tray through his recently founded company ByWhiteDesign. Le Petit Dej is a high-gloss acrylic tray with a vase that rises from the base. Injection molded acrylic. Measures 22″ x 15.5″. You can pick one up here.
So when we heard there was a new Tron movie coming out, our first thought was a resounding no thank you. We’ve seen enough of our childhood favs destroyed through remakes (we’re looking at you GI Joe and Transformers).
But after watching the leaked trailer for the new Tron movie, we’re sold. This looks super bad ass. We can’t wait for the inevitable video game that goes along with this. Syd Mead should be proud. See production stills after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »
This new addition to the Vitra collection brings sculptural reference to natural beauty we often ignore. Designed by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec the Vegital Chair draws inspiration from the world’s vegetation. It’s irregular circular seat is embedded with symetrical “branches” creating the impression of growth. Made from fibre-reinforced polyamide, Vegital is stackable and durable enough for outdoor use.
If you’re a b-boy or b-girl out there you’ll be disappointed to hear that the Beastie Boys will be postponing their upcoming tour and record release. Seminal rapper Adam Yauch AKA MCA has been diagnosed with cancer and has to under go surgery and radiation treatment. The good news is this was caught early, hasn’t spread, and is very treatable.
The video above was posted on the Beastie boys website and is Yauch’s personal message to fans. All the best to MCA from the Neu Black crew as we wish you a speedy recovery.
This amazing video was originally shown on the Ukrainian version of Americas Got Talent. Kseniya Simonova draws in sand on a light table with an absolutely beautiful soundtrack. If you’re at work and have headphones, be sure and turn the sound up.
