We miss vinyl records. The hearty, physical sound that emanated from these impressed discs may have not been as crisp as anything made popular within today’s digital age, but it felt more alive. Turn it up loud, and you could nearly imagine the band was with you in the room. We are, of course, not the only ones who appreciate this medium. Product designer and electronic music artist Yuri Suzuki recognizes the life within the record as well and through May 2nd, he will be showcasing his love of the physicality of sound via his exhibit at the Clear Gallery in Tokyo.

Moof Cycle Designed by Sjoerd Smit for Areaware

Classic details meet minimal styling in this bike by Areaware. Designed in bicycle friendly Amsterdam, where else? Powder-coated aluminum makes the bike as beautiful up close as from afar. My only regret is that a warm material with brown tones in the petals would have balanced out the leather in the seat and handles nicely. Accommodates heights range: 5’10″ – 6’6″ (179cm – 200cm). Pre-order it here for $600.

The Nickel Couch by Johnny Swing is made from approximately 7,000 nickels held together by over 35,000 welds on a stainless steel truss. Weighing in at surprisingly light 125 lbs,  can relax on your bling and show it off at the same time.

Jil Sander, Spring 09

Despite my proclivities toward clothing with more of an – ahem – ornately baroque bent, I’ve always loved the minimalist austerity at Jil Sander. The shapes are architectural and the palettes are subdued – but nothing about these pristine garments is the least bit boring. Rather, Jil Sander has always struck me as intellectualism beautifully visualized. At the helm is designer Raf Simons, whose artful touches never overpower the silhouette of his garments. Rather, for Jil Sander, the devil is in the details.

Amidst a cadre of sleek, neutral suits for Spring 2009, Simons brilliantly let it all hang loose – in the form of fringe, be it ankle-grazing or swooping from one shoulder to the other. He allowed the sinuous strands to move freely around the otherwise structured pieces, creating a lovely juxtaposition of form and movement. And though the thought of too much fringe might cause one to recoil with the horrifying thought of something like this, at Jil Sander, it’s never overdone.

Madrid based illustrator, Gabriel Moreno exhibited new works in his “More than Illustration” solo show last month. Moreno set aside 5 months to focus on the type of work that has been the basis for his career. Breaking from the bustle of ad agencies and magazines, has given Moreno the freedom to explore his subjects meticulously and focus on detail. With this show all wrapped up Moreno is now hard at work on new pieces. Check out more pieces from the show here.

Tokyo based designer, Shohei sits at the the intersection of graphic design, illustration, and pop art. His iconic imagry and wildly vibrant palates explode from his body body of work, breaking up rising sun reds and black ink gradation. Using Japanese cultural reference as a backdrop, Shohei often focuses on a singular subject in detail with subdued overall compositions.

Mr Brainwash is at it again

04.24.09   |   Posted in: Art & Design   |   By: Toshi Jones

Once again diving into the very public eye is the illusive Mr. Brainwash. This interview with NBC’s Carson Daily takes us into the studio with MBW and gives a mainstream view of his philosophies on street art, Los Angeles, and remaining relevant.

Most of what is said here has been said before in slight variation. Some might say well rehearsed. If you were looking for a hint of proof that Thierry Guetta is the main artist behind this mass of work, you’ll be disappointed.

Thanks to Assaf for the tip.

Living in Los Angeles we often forget that April means significant showers in most parts of the country. The Senz storm proof umbrella is the ultimate travel accessory, withstanding winds up to 70 mph. Functioning much like a weathervane, the unique shape of the canopy automatically locates an optimal position in the wind. Aerodynamic design and reinforced construction, including ribs in the frame, absorb force preventing the canopy from inverting. You can pick one up here for $60.
