This video for DVNO by Justice is like a 3 minute highlight reel of the past 30 years of motion graphics. There’s something a little kitschy, a little porny, and very french hipster about this trip down memory lane guided by your friends at Machine Molle. You can join us in a game of “Guess that reference” after the jump, and help us out with the ones we haven’t got yet.

Photographer Carlos Serrao

We first came across Carlos Serrao’s work in a 2004 Nike Annual Report. It obviously left an impression. The work is stripped of excess detail and for that reason, it’s extremely powerful. Equal parts great lighting and perfect timing, his work is well suited for capturing a moment in sport. When we see these images, it feels as though time has stopped, and the subject has been moved to a gallery to be admired.

zZz: Running With The Beast Music Video

Warning: This video might be upsetting to some readers.

Director Roel Wouters has created this controversial but compelling video for the band zZz. Normally birds are given barbs and spurs when fighting so that they cut each other. This was not the case for this video. Also the inks are apparently animal friendly and after the video the animals were found to have no injury. You be the judge. Check out the making of video after the jump.

All too often we see modern architecture presented as an unattainable luxury. This book shows projects with modest budgets of $120 or even $51 per square foot. In doing so it fills a gap left by most architecture books. Don’t be suprised if you end up building one in the woods and take up writing design manifestos. You can pick it up here for $26.

li wei
For almost 10 years Chinese artist Li Wei has produced intriguing images without the use of visual effects. One might say his techniques are rooted in smoke and mirrors. These complex compositions are often photographs, while he does perform some of his pieces live. His 2008 series “Life at the High Places” is a play on the “Love at High Places” (above) series he ran in 2004. His work is on view at the Yeh Rong Jia Culture & Art Foundation in Taiwan until the end of December 2008.

Bike Hero

A friend of ours at G4 sent us a link to this the other day as they debated its authenticity. As it turns out it takes a tremendous amount of work to make something that looks this “real” and of course its anything but. While every agency tries to jump on the viral video bandwagon this Bike Hero video directed by Jaron Albertin actually pulls it off by making a slightly too produced to be real adventure through suburbia that’s fun and quirky enough to be send to a friend worthy.

BTW- You can count the number of punk bands worth listening to these days on one hand, but you have to reserve at least one finger (you can guess which one) for The Living End featured in the video above.

Ekelund: Old World Charm

Ekelund
Swedish master weavers Ekelund, have been at it since 1692. With history like that one might expect them to be set in their ways. On the contrary, they have made a conscious effort at minimizing their impact on the earth. They have been approved by the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation due to their environmentally friendly processes and the use of all natural materials. Read the rest of this entry »

The “O” Logo

o-logo.jpgWhen we think of design for politics we usually think of cheap hastily thrown together materials that lack any sort of real design aesthetic. But over the course of the last election we kept noticing that the Obama campaign had obviously enlisted the help of some top shelf design talent. We checked out this interview with Sol Sender who designed the iconic “O” logo for the Obama campaign  (by none other than Steven Heller) and it is definitely worth a read.
