lightroom_2.jpgWe have been playing with Adobe’s snazzy new tool Lightroom and we have fallen in love. Where as Photoshop has become a versatile all around tool for designers, Lightroom is geared toward photographers who need to edit large batches of photos quickly.
We particularly like the ability to make corrections to one photo, then select other shots and sync our corrections. The user interface design is of the quality we tend to expect from adobe these days, simple, elegant, and logical. It’s available in beta format on Adobe’s website, get it now while it’s still free.

rothko-museum-2.jpgA tip for our Los Angeles readers: next time shopping on Melrose or Beverly take a break and check out a small but wonderful collection of paintings by Mark Rothko. Born in Russia and raised in the United States, Rothko contributed much to 1950s abstract expressionism. His signature style uses contrasting color on large canvases in order to overwhelm or envelope the viewer. He even insisted that his paintings be viewed from a distance of 18 inches for full effect. It is perhaps fitting to see his meditative work in a small, but intimate space. Located at Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in the Pacific Design Center. Hours and directions can be found here. Now through January 21st. Photo by Brian Forrest.

mark_ryden.jpgMark Ryden’s paintings are an eclectic mix of new and old styles. His subjects are cute and friendly yet dark and rebellious at the same time. His technique however is as classic as you can get- oil and soft brushes. Ryden mixes the style of old masters like Bruegel and Ingres with a Tim Buttonesque attitude and generous helpings of raw meat.

modern-wine-knot-2.jpgWith so many wine racks available, it’s hard to stand out. This design by MINT does the job. MINT is a a New York based design collective founded by Alberto Mantilla, Anthony Baxter and Scott Henderson. The name MINT is a reference to both freshness as found in the herb and also to a place of manufacture. The wine rack is made of stainless steel and molded plywood in birch and walnut. It can be found here for $83.

The work of Peter Beard is part photography, part fine art, and part safari adventure. Beard fearlessly mixes mediums for a visceral sketchbook style craft of his journeys through Africa over the last fifty odd years. We’re stunned by his books and are eagerly awaiting a Taschen volume of his latest work next year. Thanks to Ian Claridge for tipping us off to Men’s Vogue sneak peak, you can bet we are going to buy it.
